Campus biodiversity research

I am an active member of my school’s Green School Action Group, which is pretty much self-explanatory

One of the chairmen and teachers noticed my enthusiasm for bird/wildlife photography and proposed the campus biodiversity research programme to me. This idea has been brought up in past years but they just haven’t found the right person to lead the programme yet

Without a doubt, I agreed to lead this programme. Hoping to pass on my passion to the next generation of students

We decided that it would be best if we formed a small search team composed of less than 10 participants, to split up and research different kinds of biodiversity on campus, such as birds/insects/small animals. We ended up recruiting a total of 7 students including me

Thinking it would be in my best interest to set an example for the other participants, I started going to different locations on campus, staying during different times of the day, and always keeping an eye out for animals

My main focus is on birds, and throughout the month of November, I successfully recorded and identified a total of 14 different species of birds

A female daurian redstart spotted on campus

Crested myna, known for its tuft of feathers on top of its beak and its ability to imitate sounds, known as 八哥 among locals

Spotted this black kite circling above our campus, looking for prey (sunlight made it impossible for me to take a better picture)

It is during this month that my passion for bird photography truly blossomed and bore fruitful results. It gave me the confidence I needed to trek further away from our campus in search of other birds

Special thanks must be given to teachers and students for providing such a unique opportunity for me to develop my interests, as well as the school for maintaining such a great habitat for wildlife

Thanks for reading
